Super Safe Slime
We’ve all seen the craze surrounding slime – rainbow slime, unicorn slime, super stretchy slime, fluffy slime… the list is endless and kids just love it!
Here at messy monkeys we are super careful about the ingredients we use for our messy play activities and always use non toxic ingredients for our slimey activities.
Following reports in the UK about the possible irritations caused by borax and boron we thought we’d share some of our favourite SUPER SAFE SLIME recipes for you 🙂 Don’t want to try them at home? Why not contact your local messy monkeys class and see if they’ll run a slime workshop for your little monkeys to enjoy?!
Classic Gloopy Ooblek Slime
This is traditional 2 ingredient slime which is easy peasy to make at home – just mix up cornflour, available at most supermarkets in big boxes, with a little warm water – that’s it! You’ll want to do this is in a big, shallow container like a baking tray so that you can keep adding a little bit of warm water or powder along the way. When you’ve got the consistency right you’ll know – you can pick it up, roll it around in your hand and let it ooze between your fingers. Adding a bit of green paint makes for fantastic snotty bogey slime – enjoy!
Squishy Foamy Soapflake Slime
If you have the time to prepare slime in advance this is a really gooey recipe – all you need are pure soap flakes which you pop a few scoops of into a deep container and cover in warm water to melt the flakes back into goo. (Boiling water works best but adults do this bit please – the hot water can easily splash up and burn!) Give the whole lot a good stir until the flakes have all melted and add any colouring you want – paint is fine, you don’t need to spend a fortune on food colouring! You’ll need to leave the mixture to cool down – this can take a good few hours. Your slime will be very gooey – try adding cornflour to it to solidify and increase the ‘slime factor’!
Delicious Edible Chocolate Slime
This is a tasty treat for any slime fan! Slime you can eat? What’s not to love! Again, we’re using cornflour as our main ingredient (don’t ask us how it works – must be some kind of wizardry at play). Pop a scoop of cornflour and a few tablespoons of cocoa powder in a big bowl – mix it up. Pour on warm coconut milk slowly slowly – you’ll need to get your hands in to see when the consistency is just right and you have a very gooey and very yummy edible slime 🙂
Overnight Chai Seed Slime
This one is super natural and also super messy – chai seeds can find their way into just about anything – be warned! The end product is fab but it does take a little while to prepare – you might want to leave it overnight to really settle into great slime. Pour your chai seeds into a big bowl and cover with water – they’re going to expand so give them plenty of water to grow into! Now add any colour that you want to the water for the seeds to soak up – you might want to do a few different bowl fulls to get a variety of colours. In the morning, guess what?! add cornflour to the mix – again, keep adding it bit by bit until you get the gloopy, slimey consistency you are looking for! This recipe, to work really well, needs you to knead it into submission – get your hands in there and knead like mad until you have your very own chai seed slime!
Fantastic Fibre Slime
This last slime recipe needs heating up so you’ll need a big, deep bowl that’s safe in the microwave. Warm up water in a bowl (about a pint is enough to make a good amount of slime) and mix in to the hot water about 5 spoons of fibre powder. As the mixture starts to cool you’ll notice that it starts to congeal a bit but the real slimey magic is going to happen in the microwave. Pop the congealing mixture into the microwave for a minute – it might boil up while it’s in there so that’s why you need a deep bowl! After a minute take it out (carefully – it’ll be hot!) and hey presto – slimey slime!
